FACT ABOUT ARNIS

Arnis is commonly known as cane fighting but in reality it is the Filipino Martial Arts of Self-Defense.  A system of defense and control techniques which is primarily suited for those in the fields of law enforcement.  ARNIS as martial arts, come in handy with the use of forearms, elbows, fist knuckles, hand knife-edge strike and all kinds of bladed weapons.  In fact around the world observed that there are ARNIS techniques also in the most kinds of martial arts worldwide.

More than ever the Filipinos are proud that even during the time of Lapulapu, one of the national heroes of the Filipinos,  Arnis has been actively in the use and that in the year 1521 when Portuguese adventurer Ferdinand Magellan set sail and landed in Mactan Island in Cebu southern Philippines .  Not only that some of the international known Filipino heroes have been involved in the discipline.

But more than even and unknown to many, ARNIS or stick fighting which known in some parts of the world as KALI, has been known to exist and have been said to be use since hundreds of years ago in the Philippines and has been popular not only among the Maharlika or Royal Blood but, also to the layman or common people and these facts should make every Arnis buff and enthusiast proud.

These facts can well prove that ARNIS has been a Filipino martial arts and sports s for many centuries which show that it is not only fighting opponent, but also a kind of sport, a game, a physical exercise, and art of self-defense, aside from being a discipline as practiced by the Filipinos for the past many centuries and as practiced by people in many parts of the world in the few decades.

In teaching ARNIS, three traditional training methods were used by the early Filipinos they are:

1.     AMARA – an artistic execution of the swing movements and strokes for offensive and defensive purposes in repetitive drills.

2.     Striking techniques- thrusting and parrying in a prearranged manner.

3.     Technique in a no control- where two trainees engage in a free practice trying to outmaneuver each other with all their skills.

But the weapons used in today’s ARNIS have changed a lot.  Arnis became part of sports.  It is also in compliance with the directive of the Philippine Government with regards to the propagations of the sports.  The complete use of this is also advantageous for the police forces because the world sport is aimed towards the banning of the guns and weapons that fire.

In a quick span of time, ARNIS PHILIPPINES received immediate recognitions from the official sports bodies in the Philippines .  It is now solely accredited ARNIS arm in the Philippines Olympic Committee, and has been accepted as a 33rd member of the Philippines Olympic committee.

This is ARNIS, the art of self-defense of the early Filipinos which has their dignity and honor.
